Rhinoplastic surgery, or commonly known as “nose jobs,” are improving thanks to new tech now becoming more accessible. Surgeons are now using piezoelectric technology to make nose jobs more accessible as the demand rises.

New Tech to Handle Driving Demand for Nose Jobs

Nose jobs typically refer to changing the appearance of the nose for cosmetic purposes. Rhinoplastic surgery, as it is formally known, is one of the most popular forms of cosmetic surgery available nowadays. The demand is an all time high since the last decade, according to Calgary rhinoplasty providers. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), as many as 223,018 nose job procedures were performed in North America in 2016. That indicates an astonishing 115 percent growth in demand for nose jobs since 2015.

Thanks to the ever rising demand, surgeons are now able to try out new technologies that make nose jobs safer and easier to perform. Getting a nose job, just as any cosmetic surgery, is a particularly delicate procedure. A surgeon must ensure that the shape of the nose is changed as the patient desires without causing harm to natural breathing. This process may be getting easier thanks to an ultra-high frequency power tool called piezoelectric instrumentation.

From Dentist’s Office to the Plastic Surgeon’s

Piezoelectric instrumentation was initially used by dentists. The tool was popularized in the 90s by American dentists. The tool is based on Piezos, a crystal that vibrates at ultra-high frequencies. It’s considered a far more gentle approach to previous manual ways of changing nose shape. Piezoelectric instrumentation can cut through hard tissue like bone, but not soft muscle tissue. When the instrument hits soft tissue, it stops cutting and instead vibrates. As a result, bleeding from using these instruments is minimal. Previously, plastic surgeons used hammers and chisels to cut through bone and tissue, which was not considered ideal and was known to cause severe bleeding and bruising.

Piezoelectric technology was first only used in Europe. But in 2010, a Silicon Valley surgeon successfully performed a nose job and a chin alteration using the tech. Since then, these tools have become available in the U.S. Canadians can also benefit from these high tech tools at rhinoplasty services in Calgary.

The Future of Rhinoplasty

According to surgeons, the new Piezoelectric technology will bring nose jobs to the 21st century. The tech is hailed for giving surgeons more precision and control during procedures. Results, in general, are more predictable than with the hammer and chisel model. Recovery is also rapid thanks to minimal bleeding and bruising. Patients may be able to recover as soon as within a week, as opposed to months of recovery with the older methods.

Additionally, piezoelectric instruments make it possible for surgeons to perform rhinoplasty on younger patients. While young patients may not undergo cosmetic nose jobs, surgery is sometimes necessary to correct naturally occurring defects of the physiology of the nose that may hinder breathing. Younger patients who suffer trauma to the nose because of accidents or other situations that require corrective surgery can benefit from this new tech-powered surgery as well.
